WHY is processed MEAT bad for you?


Recently the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that processed meats raise the risk of colon and stomach cancer.The Global Burden of Disease Project, an independent academic research organization, claims about 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide are attributable to diets high in processed meat.

But Why?

Few articles mention specific reasons whyprocessedmeat is considered bad for your body. There are several: 1) nitrates and other chemicals, 2) overcooking and 3) overeating.

1) Nitrates & Food Born Chemicals

Youve probably heard that processed meat contain nitrates and nitrites which are preservatives added to processed meat to help prevent the growth of bacteria. When meat is processed it can result in formation of carcinogenic chemicals, includingN-nitroso-compounds(NOC) andPolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAH). Cooking improves the digestibility and palatability of meat but overcooking can produce known or suspected carcinogens, includingHeterocyclic Amines(HCA) and PAH,1according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer Working Group.

A study done with 61,433 women from Sweden compared the consumption of processed meats and unprocessed meats. They found a high correlation between the risk of stomach cancer and consumption of processed meats high in nitrosamines.2

Other chemicals that can be created (bio activated) from processing and cooking are HCA and PAH. Both are carcinogens with the ability to damage DNA and increase the risk of cancer.

How? Meat naturally contains amino acids, creatine and sugars which react at high temperatures to create HCA. Processed meat, especially when grilled and smoked, create a high PAH content. Studies suggest that the increase of PAH content arises from pyrolysis of fat at high grilling temperatures.3

2) Overcooking

Overcooking the meat to create a Maillard (browning) effect can create Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE). Maillard is a non-enzymatic reaction that occurs at high temperatures. AGE increases oxidative stress and inflammation within the body which contribute to the development of many diseases. High AGE consumption has been associated with pancreatic cancer, Alzheimers disease, and diabetes.4Human intervention studies revealed that low AGE diets decreased inflammatory status in individuals with diseases.

3) Overeating

Too much of anything can be harmful to your body. Americans in general have a high meat consuming diet averaging 50-100g per day per person.5By comparison, the US Department of Agriculture Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of dietary protein is 46 grams for women and 56 grams for men. That is equivalent to about 5-6 ounces of a protein containing food such as nuts, eggs, beans, or meat. Eating less protein, thus eating less red meat can elongate our lives and decrease the risk of developing cancer. A meta-analysis of studies indicated that an increase of 100g of red meat increased the risk of colorectal cancer to 12-17%. The risk for colorectal cancer had a 49% increase when consuming 25g of processed meat.6Therefore, eating red meat in moderation and limiting your intake of processed meat may prevent the development of colorectal cancer.

On the plus side

Meat does have proven nutritional benefits such as protein, vitamin B complex and minerals (iron, zinc) all of which are important to healthy body function. Red meat in a grass fed form is clearly not as bad for you as processed meat.

If you are going to eat red meat some tips to help make it safer to consume are:

  • Marinate the meat it helps tenderize the meat and decrease the formation of AGE
  • Boil, poach, or stew at lower heats to decrease the formation of AGE, HCA, & PAH
  • Be aware that grilling or barbequing your meat will create HCA and smoking and charring will create PAH

FooD ALLERGY signs and symptoms


FOOD ALLERGY symptoms ranked from mild to severe.

MILD ALLERGY meansthe symptoms you experience tend to be uncomfortable but not severe, such as:

  • wheezing
  • mucus: throat clearing or runny nose
  • red, itchy or watery eyes
  • tingling (anywhere but usually in or around the mouth, chin, cheeks)
  • red or warm flush (anywhere but usually the face or chest)
  • physical fatigue (extending to exhaustion)
  • recurring itch
  • mental fatigue (brain fog)

MODERATE meansmore persistent, more frequent, lasts longer or more intense of any above plus these:

  • rapid or abnormal pulse
  • drop or elevation of blood pressure
  • heart palpitations
  • loss of consciousness
  • break out into a sweat

Heres how. An Ancient ritual practice seems suited. Introducing: A Round. This vehicle takes one from an outer hectic reality, through steps, which decease activity and leads to Silence. Silence. The greatest metabolic rest occurs with meditation. Awareness Meditation (AM) to be specific. Try these simple steps, taking 5-15 minutes each one.

MOST OUTER. Start with the most outer form of activity:movement. Start fast and slow down. The slower the better. Slowing the movement down even more, to be with the breath. From this simple dance comes all Qi Gong forms, Tai Chi and such.

REDUCEMore. Descend to the floor for yoga. This is not exercise or motion. It is holding a stretch position for several, at least 3, slooww, lonngg, deeep breaths.

STILLER still. Now sit with straight spine. Make your exhales twice as long as your free, open mouthed inhales. Now make the exhale three times as long. Now 4 times. 5x.

MOST INNER. When you notice that you just spaced out above, you are on your way. For the next while just sit and watch. No more breath control. Just watch the body breath itself. Observe the thoughts think themselves. It all happens by itself, quite naturally, without any help from you, thank you very much. In fact, as soon as you DO anything, Awareness Meditation stops. It becomes the usual thinking, analyzing, figuring, assuming, judging. AM is the only time in your life when YOU dont have to DO anything. Just watch. Witness. Observe. With a neutral, cordial attitude. Like watching leaves wisp over the lawn.

After 20 minutes, youre done. Round 1 complete. You may notice deep rest. Restful Awareness. A successful AM session. Take time to get used to greater activity with a yawn, a stretch, a deliberate deep breath.

Human Gas


Pass on the Gas?

Do you feel gaseous or bloated after a meal? Pass gas? Have gas?
There are a variety of reasons that can cause improper digestion and intestinal gas (flatus). Some influencing factors are diet, antibiotics, food allergies, and leaky gut syndrome.
Diet:
If youre someone who eats a lot of beans, fruits, vegetables, and grains you may be getting too much fiber in your diet, which is causing the flatulence. Cutting out high sugar producing foods such as fruits, beans, and grains would allow your stomach to digest more easily. Regarding vegetables, eating a salad that has raw cold veggies causes your stomach acid to have to work harder. Taking time to cook your vegetables helps your stomach digest much faster. Steaming your vegetables is the most effective way to gain the highest nutrition from them (see recipes on our site). Eating cooked vegetables and proteins are the ideal foods to digest best. Other high sugar producing foods to cut out are ice cream, carbonated beverages, cereals, wheat, candy, and fruits.
Antibiotics:
Antibiotics, although effective in killing bad bacteria, also kill good bacteria in your body. It interrupts the normal bacteria flora in your bowel. Its extremely important to be taking probiotics while taking antibiotics to help build back up the good bacteria in your body. Probiotics can be found in yogurt with live and active cultures. It is recommended to take a broad range probiotic with several strains in order to counteract the negative effects of antibiotics. Researchers around the world are studying how active cultures from live foods like yogurt or kefir can prevent gastrointestinal infections.
Food Sensitivities:
The most common food intolerances are dairy and gluten. A lactose and gluten intolerance doesnt allow your body to break down sugar as easily, which causes gas and bloating in some people. A gluten intolerance can lead to excess gas, weight gain or loss, or diarrhea. Nuts are a common allergy as well which can cause bloating. Superior Medicine

Liver Warning Signs: Liver Detox Needed


Your humble liver has over 400 essential uses including detoxifying, metabolizing drugs, regulating hormones, absorbing nutrients and many more. It usually takes care of itself but when the limit is reached, like all things, it breaks down. Here are the most common signs of trouble and why we recommend a 21-Day DETOX twice a year.

Digestive changes
(a) Diarrhea: This is a common issue related to liver problems.
(b) Stool: a change in color of stool to light brown or white.
(c) Nausea, stomach pain, then throwing up

Dark Urine
Check your liver health by checking your urine before flushing. Warning sign if urine is dark yellow or brown (or stool lighter brown than usual, as noted above).

Exhaustion

Ankle bloating
Problems with kidney, heart or liver influences fluid circulation causing fluids to build up around lower extremities like the feet.

Skin bruising
Random patches of black-and-blue, brown coloration of skin, classic liver spots or frequent bruising that doesnt heal all indicate liver stress as blood clotting proteins decline.

Sensitivity to smells
When liver has reached capacity, you will react to smells (odors, chemicals, perfume, etc) with discomfort, upset or headache. This is called MCS: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
